Discovering Olive Oil
Olive oil from the Sierra Subbética of Córdoba has been highly regarded from Roman times right up to the present day, with the oil from our region winning prestigious awards all over the world. We believe firmly that the high quality of our star product, Extra Virgin olive oil, comes from a combination of our favourable environment and the skill of the olive farmers and blenders.
The olive stock, in particular the picuda, hojiblanca and picual varieties, dates back hundreds of years, and grows within the boundaries of the Sierra Subbética National Park. Thousands and thousands of olive trees form a sea of green around the highest mountain of Córdoba province, the 1570 metre La Tiñosa. The region was declared protected in 1988, and boasts a unique ecosystem, rich inflora and fauna, and a stunning landscape, with its Karstic limestone formations of mountains and valleys.
The mountainous terrain means harvesting olives is difficult, and can only be carried out manually, giving the local olive oil a distinctive character, which cannot be easily reproduced elsewhere.
Our mission is to spread the knowledge of olive oil culture from the roots upwards. Hispasur offers a range of tourist activities to encourage our customers to fall in love with the stunning surroundings and, of course, our prized olive oil:
1. GUIDED OLIVE OIL TASTING
A tasting session is essential to learn to differentiate between the different types of olive oil. An expert taster will explain how the oil is made, how to tell the difference between varieties and how to recognise a top quality olive oil.
2. GUIDED OLIVE OIL TASTING AND VISIT TO OUR OLIVE GROVE
Before the tasting, we offer a visit to our ancient olive groves to see where the typical local olive varieties grow and how they are farmed and harvested.
3. VISIT TO PRIEGO DE CÓRDOBA AND COUNTRY BREAKFAST
The above options can be enhanced by a guided tour of one of Spain´s prettiest towns, rounded off with a typical breakfast: the perfect way to enjoy the scenery and our exquisite olive oil.
